Just when you think you’ve seen it all, a new item catches your attention. This is the case of the Callaway uPro golf GPS system.
Callaway is a well known name in the golfing community, not only for one of the most beautiful golf courses in the country, but also as a quality manufacturer of golfing equipment. The UPro is their first entry into the golf GPS systems and it’s a real eye catcher.
One of the lightest and slimmest golf GPS units on the market, the UPro golf GPS introduces its’ new technology to the delight of the golfing community. It sports a 2.2″ high screen in brilliant, daylight viewable color.
In the pro mode it will run a “fly over video” of the hole you are about to play. If you are on a course you have never played , this is a fantastic feature as it really shows you what to expect.
Callaway’s new SmartView technology enables the Callaway UPro golf GPS to automatically present dynamically generated “viewports,” which show you information based on your next potential shot. That’s right, it actually anticipates what your next shot should be. As your position on the course changes, so does the view of the course. Unlike golf GPS systems that only give you green information from the front approach, when you approach the green with the uPro, you get the front, center and back measurements based on where you are approaching the green from.
You can even purchase a software add-on to enable the uPro to accept voice commands for most of the standard features.
The UPro golf GPS offers two variations of golf course downloads. The Basic plan, which offers free downloads, shows the distance to the front and back of all hazards differentiating between types of hazards. Hazards are automatically displayed in the order they appear on the course based on your location on the hole. The information is updated as you move down the course. You are also continually provided the distance from your position to the front, center and back of the green.
The second plan is the Pro mode (which has the video fly over) with download prices ranging from $10 to $1.20 per course depending on the number of credits you purchase. In Pro mode, in addition to the video flyover giving the player the layout of the hole from an aerial view, it also offers scale-accurate measurements to measure to any point on the course even from the outer limits of the rough (where I seem to spend a great deal of time).
You can also track your shots allowing you to find out exactly just how far you hit the 5 iron or how long a typical drive is.
One Pro mode download is included with the purchase price. Course downloads are available to Callaway uPro owners by simply connecting the Callaway uPro device to a computer that has internet access. Once it is connected to a computer, the user will be automatically directed to http://www.uprogps.com where courses all over the nation are listed and available for download on a click and buy basis.
The GPS technology programmed in the Callaway uPro provides the user with a list of all golf courses in the U.S and will provide an automatically sorted list of golf courses closest to your current location. This is truly a unique golf GPS and for further information I would recommend taking a quick look at http://the-portable-gps.com/ golf-gps-systems.html to explore all the features the UPro golf GPS and other golf GPS systems have to offer.
Although the UPro golf GPS currently does not have a digital scorecard we have been told by Callaway that they expect to have a software upgrade, offering that feature, available this spring. The UPro is compatible with Windows XP, Vista, and Mac OS X v10.4 or later.
